From the middle of the 17th century until the 1840s, the education of a young British gentleman would often culminate in a “Grand Tour” — a year of travel to the cultural capitals of Europe, providing direct exposure to the legacy of ancient Roman civilization and the arts that developed in the Renaissance.Through this app, we re-imagine and recreate the Grand Tour for modern audiences through music and visual art to design his or her itinerary, electing the cities that will be visited and the music that will be performed. Audience members will be able to choose music composed in different places. The specific musical genre that will form the backbone of this Grand Tour is the “fantasy’’ — a free-form musical genre that was often a favorite of the great composers but which is less frequently performed today. By combining music with history, art, and architecture, presented in various media, the project will both interdisciplinary and interactive. It will allow modern students of all social backgrounds to experience the Grand Tour for themselves.
